Have You Considered Counseling To Help Save Your Marriage?
If a relationship is in trouble, even more so if it is a marriage, considering counseling to help save your marriage is a very good idea. Have you given it some thought? I know people feel it is like washing your dirty laundry in public, but more than your pride is at stake here as your marriage is the centre of your life. All other relationships revolve around it. So, seriously, consider counseling to help save your marriage.
Now you probably want to know how you can be sure counseling is right for you. To be honest, if your marriage is in trouble, counseling is right for you, but here are a few areas that make counseling especially important.
If you have any of the following in your marriage, I doubt very much if you will be able to fix it on yourself.
So have a look at this list:
- Work-Life Balance
- Substance Abuse
- Family Violence
- Blended Family Issues
- Infidelity
- Conflict
- Communication
- Problems with Children
The right counselor will be able to help you work through all these relationship issues in your family. You will be taught how to handle them and how to communicate them properly.
It is important that you learn all the necessary communication skill and that you learn a few coping skills for when things are rough. A good counselor will also be able to help you with all the issues in your life. It may sound strange, but it is important as they may be the erosion why you act the way you do.
OK, now you have decided to go for counseling, now you have to find a therapist you can trust. Remember this therapist is going to be a family therapist and the whole family will have to be able to work with this person. Do not simply go to the first one you find. Interview a few and see if you get a "good" or "bad" feeling about your therapist. If your gut tells you the therapist is wrong, go on looking.
To narrow things down, here are a few questions you may want to ask the therapist before you make your decision:
- What should I expect from counseling?
- What are your treatment methods?
- Have you worked with couples experiencing the difficulties we're having?
- What are your prices?
Get referrals from people who have used counselors or get names from referral services. Even your family physician will be able to give you a few names. If you belong to a church the members of your congregation are bound to have the names of a few good Christian counselors.
If all else fails, you can go to some therapists sites on the internet. On there site you will get more than just their name and number, you will usually get a resume, some articles written by the person and lots of other details about the practice.
What you have to make sure of is that the therapist is a registered therapist. Some therapists have what is known as a MFT (Marriage & Family Therapist License) which can only be obtained after a therapist completes both a master's degree in Psychology and 1500 hours of internship work under another licensed therapist. Other acceptable licenses include the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker), Ph.D or Psy.D. (Psychologist with a doctorate degree) and M.D. (Psychiatrist.)
It is important to choose a licensed therapist, a professional person, because that way you know the therapist has gone through proper training and that this person has to maintain strict standards to stay registered. Be very wary of "relationship coaches" and such as you have no idea what their training is and if they adhere to the correct standards in their practice. Do not take that chance!
Well, if I now ask you the question again: "Have you considered counseling to help save your marriage?" you will not be so frightened any more. You now know that you can really get a good counselor that will be able to help you to save your marriage.
